  • Salmon-bearing streams of the Discovery Islands

Clearcut logging raises the water temperature of streams and increases sediment loads, both of which are detrimental to the long-term health of salmon populations and other aquatic species.

This project is mapping and gathering information about all the streams on the Discovery Islands that support populations of salmon and other fish species. Please add your knowledge to our database through the comments section below, or contact us.

Use the + or - buttons in the map below to zoom in and out. You can pan around the map by clicking on it and and dragging. Click on any blue star to view the record of that stream’s historical salmon returns.

The mapping of streams above is maintained by GEO BC. For the most part the information it contains is correct. However, we have noticed two errors (so far).

    Map errors:

    1. This map has Nugedzi Lake emptying into Discovery Passage. In fact, it empties into Village Bay on the east side of Quadra Island.

    2. Hyacinthe Creek is shown as “McKercher Creek.” The latter name applies to a tributary of Hyacinthe Creek. McKercher Creek flows south into Hyacinthe Creek and runs parallel to Hyacinthe Bay Road. The headwaters of McKercher Creek are in a wetland area below and on the east side of the Mount Seymour ridge.

If you know of other errors in the Province’s mapping of Discovery Islands’ streams, please add it below.
