Mount William
Mount William (right background)
MOUNT WILLIAM, like Read Island, according to The Encyclopedia of Raincoast Place Names, was named in 1864 for Captain William Viner Read, a naval assistant at the British Admiralty's hydrographic headquarters in England. It's unknown whether Read ever saw his namesake island. The hydrographic assistant was also the inspiration for the names of Viner Point and Read Point on Read Island. The naming of all these land features appears to have been inspired by the promotion of Captain George Richards from chief Royal Navy surveyor to the position of hydrographer of the Royal Navy.
